My Prompt for March is:
"What is the most memorable book from your childhood?" childhood being described as elementary school age or early middle school.
This I thought would be an easy prompt, "I know! The one I've already wrote about on Maevyn's Bookshelf! I can also plug that new part of my blog!" (which I will still do..), but when I stop and really think about it there are two.
One, I have written about already for my section "Maevyn's Bookshelf" called The Fairy Rebel. Which is a cute little story and I was captivated by the descriptions made by the author. The most memorable being 'her almond shaped nails'. I couldn't tell you why that stayed in my mind since 1st grade, but it has. So much so that I have since gone back and read the book as an adult (not as fun I'll add) for my podcast (that I have since stopped creating.).
The second, I don't know the name for, so I will have to describe everything I can remember, after that, maybe someone can tell me what it's title or author is.
The first thing I remember is that there is a father and a son, or daughter, but just the pair. The father makes kites, but not like any old kite, Chinese or Japanese kites, because the story is set in a later year in either China or Japan. The father makes kites, and they are shown in an annual festival, the child is taken to see their fathers handiwork and begins to make dreams about following in the fathers footsteps.
Something happens and the pair is forced out of their home, and the father can no longer make kites for a living. At some point they end up living in an alley, in a shelter made from brick, I imagined it as the father constructed the shelter from mismatched bricks and there was holes in it due to not being cemented. They would sneak out at night and steal food from the garbage or a neighboring house. I am thinking that maybe they were forced out of their house due to some war, but I can't say for sure. Eventually the father can make kites again and they get back on their feet. That's all I remember, that and exactly where I found it in my elementary school library.
Others to check out would be
Green Glass Sea, a story about a military child who's father is working on a military base. Spoiler, it has a sad ending. Written by Ellan Klages ( and I just learned after looking up the author, that it is a part of a series! White Sands and Red Menace.)
Chinese Cinderella, Cinderella, but in china, and very very sad and disturbing. Written by Adeline Yen Mah
Fire Within (a series The Last Dragon Chronicles) a woman makes clay dragons that come to life and serve a purpose in the household or the persons life they live in. It's so cute. There are seven books in total. Written by Chris D'Lacey
There's actually a Facebook group for finding the names of stuff! I think it's like What That Thing Named or What Was That One Thing or something like that (urbanfae)
